Wax formulas differ in how much fragrance they can accept and how much they weigh for a given volume. These figures are useful planning ranges, not a substitute for the technical sheet for your exact wax.

Avoid These Problems

Four Fragrance-Percentage Errors That Can Throw Off a Batch

A small measuring or formula error can change an entire pour. Keeping your recipe weight-based and within the limits of your materials makes batches easier to repeat and troubleshoot.

Mistake 01

Using spoons or cups instead of a scale

Equal volumes of wax and fragrance oil do not necessarily weigh the same. For repeatable formulas, weigh fragrance on a digital scale rather than measuring it with tablespoons, cups, or other volume-based tools.

Mistake 02

Pushing past what the wax can hold

Adding extra oil is not a guaranteed way to create a stronger candle. Once the wax is overloaded, oil may migrate to the surface, seep from the candle, or interfere with burning. Use the manufacturer's stated limit as your ceiling and confirm performance with testing.

Mistake 03

Treating vessel volume like wax weight

A vessel marked by fluid volume does not take the same number of ounces of wax by weight. With a specific gravity of 0.86, an 8 fl oz water capacity corresponds to roughly 6.88 oz of candle material by weight. This tool performs that conversion automatically.

Mistake 04

Ignoring the recommended mixing temperature

The temperature at which fragrance is mixed into wax can affect incorporation and finished performance. Some wax systems call for fragrance to be added around 180–185°F (82–85°C), while others use a different window. Follow the instructions for your actual wax and oil rather than treating one temperature as universal.

Remember: The fragrance percentage is only one variable. Wax formulation, oil compatibility, wick choice, vessel diameter, cure time, and the way the candle is burned all contribute to the final result.

When the Scent Feels Weak

What Else Affects Scent Throw?

If a finished candle smells lighter than expected, do not assume the fix is simply more fragrance oil. Evaluate the rest of the candle system before changing the percentage.

  • Give it timeMany candle formulas are evaluated after roughly 1–2 weeks of curing. A very early test can make an otherwise workable formula seem weaker than it will be after the wax and fragrance have had more time together.
  • Check the wickA wick that is too small may produce a limited melt pool and reduce the amount of fragrance released while burning. Match the wick to the vessel, wax, and fragrance system, then verify it through a complete burn test.
  • Match the spaceA small-format candle has less output to work with in a large or open room. Set scent expectations according to both the candle size and the space it is intended to fragrance.
  • Oil performanceTwo fragrance oils used at the same percentage can behave very differently. The oil's composition and how well it works with your wax can have a major effect on the final throw.
  • Wax choiceWax bases and blends release fragrance differently. Use the reference chart as an initial planning aid, then let the supplier documentation and your own burn tests guide the final formula.
